Shared Farmhouse in Cornwall
This is a big old comfortable farmhouse with thick stone walls and slate flagstone floors. It is in a small very friendly rural community where people go out of their way to help each other. The house is set in 7 acres with sea views and a footpath leading from the garden out to the coast.
I love hospitality and sharing the farmhouse as a way of life which I came here to do back in 1998. Rather than being modernized, the house has changed only gradually over the years and so is not very different now to how it would have been 40 years ago when this was still a working farm. I repair and maintain nearly everything myself with a view to preserving this history. There’s a feeling of timelessness here, a sense of connection with the past and lovely countryside all around us.
Years ago I learnt metal working skills as a clockmaker/craftsman and later went into industrial design. I like older technology and machinery. I mow our fields using a Fergusson tractor from 1950 and the van that we use for picking up materials etc is a 1954 Morris Commercial which makes people smile these days when they see it coming along the road.
Although we’re in the countryside it’s only 5 minutes from Looe by car or taxi. Looe is a fishing harbour and seaside town with a sandy beach and many small pubs and good quality restaurants that serve excellent evening meals. Also within easy reach are the North coast and places of interest such as The Eden Project, The Lost Gardens of Heligan and Lanhydrock House. The farmhouse itself is in An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a haven for birds and wildlife. Beyond the garden and fields the National Trust farmland along this coastline is “open access” so there is a wide area of countryside here that you are free to roam and explore without having to drive anywhere or even walk along any roads.
There’s a rail link from Looe to the mainline station in Liskeard and you can be at Newquay Airport in under an hour by road. Superfast broadband and free parking next to the house.
