Co-housing with neighbours aged 1 to 80
When Hilary and Lois decided to move into ‘Cohaus’ in Auckland, they were attracted by the prospect of living with multiple generations. It seemed a much healthier option than just mixing with people their age. As Lois puts it: “We are all colleagues. I have grandchildren here, but I am not thought of as someone’s grandmother”.
So they went … now living in a community of 20 households, all of them connected through shared values and a focus on the environment. Each one has their own private apartment, but they share the garden, laundry room, bike shed, guest suite and four hybrid cars. It’s the best of both worlds – company, at a distance.
