House sharing when you're older

A house share with people other than a partner or in a traditional family is common-place for younger people, but it’s also a great alternative to living alone when you're older.

Not only can you save money on rent or generate a little extra income, you can also have companionship and meet new people. But if you’re aged 40+ then finding the right people to share with can be difficult.

If you are the owner of a house or flat with a spare room to rent then finding the right sort of person as a housemate can also be difficult. Part of your decision to let a room in the first place may depend on who you can find as a lodger. Equally finding someone to join an already established home can be tricky.

Either way, registering with Cohabitas gives you the best chance of finding them.

Frequently asked questions

Some quick answers to the top 6 questions (full FAQ link below):

1. What does it cost to register? It's completely free.

2. How much does it cost to list a room? Nothing, that's also free.

3. How do we make money and pay for services? We charge a membership fee which enables you to securely message other users you'd like to contact about a room or starting a new house share - as many as you like - starts at just £9.90 for 30 days. We also accept advertising in our email and onsite (see below)

4. Can people contact me? Yes, if they pay for a membership, but they cannot see your personal contact details as they can only contact you via the secure onsite messaging system. If you're not interested just politely say so. If you experience any unwanted attention after that then you can report them or block them from contacting you.

5. Why does my room listing not appear? Usually because you did not add a photo. Only rooms with photos appear in Find a room searches.
