Guide to adding a Housemate listing

Creating a great housemate or room to rent listing

Registering on Cohabitas is free and easy. In case you experience difficulties, here is our a guide to help you register as a Housemate looking for a room.

If you still don’t fancy doing this yourself then see our telephone registration Service, where we do it all for you.

Getting started

We start by asking you to set a Username, and to enter your name, email and password.

Username: This is your name on the site that other members will see on your profile. It needs to be between 6 and 15 characters long. If a username is already in use you will be notified and should try an alternative.

Email: In some cases you will be advised that the email you are trying to register is already in use on the site, so please go back and sign-in using the email address, this means that you have registered before.

Password: This field requests a password between 6 and 15 characters including letters and numbers. Please take care to remember your password, although you can reset this using the link just below the password field when logging in later.

Account type

Please be sure to check you select the account type relevant to your need because this determines the listing information you need to provide to complete registration.

Select To find a room in a shared house or flat.

In the next few steps you can add more detail about yourself and what you are looking for.

You can either register for yourself, on behalf of another person (e.g. a friend or a parent) or on behalf of an organisation/business. For most people this would probably be ‘for myself’.

This means that if you have friends or relatives who you think would find the Cohabitas site useful, but you are concerned they cannot register, then you can register on their behalf.

Date of birth: It is easiest if you select the year first, then use the arrows to navigate to the right month and day. You need to be at least 35 years old to use the Cohabitas service. We use this minimum age to keep our community tailored to the needs and expectations of a more mature and discerning audience.

Common error messages

If you try to register once and then for some reason are not taken to the next screen so try to register again, you may be told that the email address is in use and to use another. In this case you have in fact registered.

You should go back and sign-in using the email address and password you registered (perhaps unknowingly). Check your email spam folder and you may find your welcome email in there.

Username does not meet criteria. You will see an error message alerting you that your username must be between 6 and 15 characters long.

Password does not meet criteria. You will see an error message alerting you that your password must be between 6 and 15 characters long.

Tick the terms and conditions box. Without this you cannot complete your registration. If you miss this then you need to enter the new security code on the next attempt.

Listing preferences

Once you have completed the first page you will be taken to a second screen where you can select all your preferences for your ideal house share

Headline: Write a short headline for your listing that describes yourself and/or what you are looking for. For example: “Artist & Writer looking for new home” or “Quiet person seeks similar housemate”.

Category: These are the searches that your listing will appear in.

Looking for a room means a room in an existing shared house or in a house with a live-in landlord.

Buddy-up means to find other housemates (one or more) to group together to rent a new property. You can select both if you prefer.

Would like to live in: Start to type the town or area you are planning to live in and choose from the list of places that will automatically appear. Alternatively, you can just click ‘Select address on map’ and drop the pin in your preferred area.

A bit more about me

Please take a few minutes to complete this section about yourself. It is a great chance to introduce yourself to your future housemates and let your personality shine through! We love the fact that our members treat this as a nice and supportive community. Also include what sort of person or house share you are looking for, and any things that are particularly important to you.

Displaying your phone number

Towards the bottom of the page you have the option to add and display your personal phone number to other members. Please note that this option is only available for premium members with a paid for membership. It is fully up to you if you would like to make your number public. We recommend to keep it private and use the site’s encrypted messaging system initially, but we know some people prefer to get in touch with others directly.

Submit listing

Once you are happy with your listing you can preview it to see what it will look like to other members. To complete your registration don’t forget to click ‘Submit listing‘ at the end.
