Why do you house share?

Pie chart about Reasons For House Sharing

We asked Cohabitas users ‘Why do you house share?’ just before Christmas 2024. We offered a one-click answer, with 3 options, to get a quick gauge on how people feel about this now that the COVID pandemic has passed and things seemed to have settled down.

We asked both people offering a room in their home (Live-in landlords predeominantly), as well as those looking for a room (Housemates), because for both sorts of users there is a reason and value to share.

Do you house share for social or financial reasons?

We asked a simple one-click question:

The results were broadly similar for both landlords and for lodgers, but it is significant that a large majority of Cohabitas landlords (predominantly live-in landlords), say that they either prefer not to live alone or share for both social and financial reasons (78%).

This is understandable, as people registering on Cohabitas probably have a pre-disposition to share their home. It is also because room listings on Cohabitas are mainly not from professional landlords, but instead from home owners, or lead housemates, looking for a particular sort of person to live with.
